The Citadel of the Spirit

100:2.7 (1096.4)Jesus described the deep-seated security of man who knows God by saying, “What does it matter to a God-knowing believer in the kingdom when all earthly things collapse? The certainties of the world are fragile, but spiritual certainties are unassailable. When the tidal waves of human adversity, selfishness, cruelty, hatred, malice and envy overwhelm the soul of mortal man, you can find peace in the assurance that there is one inner bastion, the citadel of the spirit, which is absolutely impregnable; at least this is true of every man who has entrusted his soul to the care of the indwelling spirit of the eternal God.

100:2.8 (1096.5)After achieving such spiritual progress, either through gradual growth or as a result of a special crisis, a new orientation of the personality takes place and a new standard of values develops. These spirit-born people acquire such a different motivation in life that they can remain calm under it when they see their fondest ambitions shipwrecked and their most ardent hopes collapse; they know with certainty that these catastrophes are only the reorienting disasters by which their temporary creations are broken down, before the nobler, more enduring realities of a new, higher level of achievement in the universe can be built up.
